So the RAM stands for is “Random Access Memory”.

In this memory, the information stored in this type of memory is lost when the power supply of the computer or laptop is turned off.

The information stored in the RAM can be verified with the help of BIOS. Generally known as main memory, temporary memory, cache or volatile memory of a computer system.

There are three basic Different Types of RAM.

Dynamic RAM | Different Types of RAM

As the name DRAM, or dynamic random access memory, indicates, this form of memory technology is a type of random access memory.

Each piece of data is stored in a small capacitor inside the memory cell. The capacitor can be charged or discharged and this provides the two states, “1” or “0” for the cell.

Due to the leakage of charge within the capacitor, it is necessary to update each memory cell periodically. This update requirement gives rise to a dynamic term: static memories do not need to be updated.

The advantage of DRAM is the simplicity of the cells: it requires only one transistor, compared to the usual static RAM and about six in one SRAM cells. Due to its simplicity, DRAM costs much less than SRAM and can provide much higher levels of memory density.

However, DRAM also has disadvantages, and as a result, most computers use DRAM and SRAM technology, but in different areas.

In view of the fact that power is required for DRAM to hold your data, this is called volatile memory. Memory technologies like Flash are non-volatile and retain data even when the power goes out.

Static RAM | Different Types of RAM

Static RAM uses a completely different technology. S-RAM retains the stored information only while the power supply is on. Static RAMs are more expensive and consume more power. They have a higher speed than D-RAM. They store information in Hip-Hope.

In static RAM, a form of flip flop contains each bit of memory. A flip-flop for a memory cell needs four or six transistors along with some wires, but it never has to be upgraded.

This makes static RAM significantly faster than dynamic RAM. However, because it has more parts, a static memory cell takes up much more space on a chip than a dynamic memory cell.

The latter type of RAM is not volatile. This is the most unusual type of RAM due to the fact that it must have its own power supply connected to the chip itself.

This makes the chip bulkier and needs to be replaced more often. However, this RAM has certain uses. In situations where the data is absolutely essential, such as in certain military and scientific applications, non-volatile RAM can interrupt the power of a computer unit, but reboot with all running programs intact.

SDRAM is capable of running at 133MHz, which is about three times faster than FPM RAM and two times faster than EDO RAM. Most Pentium or Celeron systems purchased in 1999 have SDRAM.

DDR RAM

DDR RAM, which stands for “Double Data Rate”, which is a type of SDRAM and first appeared on the market around 2001,

but it didn’t catch on until around 2001 when mainstream motherboards started to support it.

The difference between SDRAM and DDR RAM is that instead of doubling the clock rate, it transfers data twice per clock cycle, effectively doubling the data rate.

DDR RAM has become mainstream in the graphics card market and has become the memory standard.

DDR2 RAM

DDR2 RAM, which stands for “Double Data Rate 2”, is a newer version of DDR that is twice as fast as the original DDR RAM.

DDR2RAM came out in mid-2003 and the first DDR2-compatible chipsets came out in mid-2004. DDR2 still has a double data rate just like the original DDR, however, DDR2-RAM has modified signaling that allows it to achieve higher speeds with more immunity to signal noise and crosstalk between signals.

RAMBUS (RIMM) RAM

RAMBUS RDRAM is a type of RAM of its own, it came out in 1999 and was developed from traditional DRAM, but its architecture is totally new.

The RAMBUS design provides smarter access to RAM, which means the drives can pre-fetch data and free some work from the CPU.

The idea behind RAMBUS RAM is to get small data packets out of RAM but at very high clock speeds. For example, SD-RAM can get 64 bits of information at 100 MHz, while RAMBUS RAM would get 16 bits of data at 800 MHz.

The RAM RIMM was generally unsuccessful as Intel had a lot of problems with timing the RAM or the signal noise. RD RAM appeared on the Sony Playstation 2 and Nintendo 64 game consoles.
